Finding Web Applications

Me
Yesterday I blathered on about how hard it was to find quality mobile apps for Android and iPhone/iPod Touch.  [info]menace3 was kind enough to share some links to help me find better mobile apps.

I thought then about Web Apps.  I use several sites to figure out what's new in the world of web applications, so I'd figure I share those sites so others who are interested in such things can find interesting web apps.

One thing you get from these sites is an appreciation of how horrible some web app ideas are, or how terrible implementation can really be.  You also get an appreciation of how innovative some ideas really are.

So without further ado, here's the list.  Each one opens in a new window/tab.

Webware from CNet (They do more than talk about new web apps, they also review them).
Go2web20 (They list logos.  When you hover over them, you get the apps tagline)
Netwebapp (Very slow to update.  Good if you don't want a lot in your RSS reader)
Listio
KillerStartups (They do 15 apps a day).
FeedMyApp (my favorite of the list, simply because they have a nicer web site than the others.)
Techcrunch (A blog that often reviews new web apps.)

Finding Good Mobile Applications

I have a love/hate relationship with the iTunes App store and the Android market.  Generally lately, it's more hate than love.  Why?  Well, the iTunes app store has WAY too many apps, most of them of no use to me, and it's really hard to find decent apps.  I'm sure many apps I would use a lot are buried somewhere in that store, never to see the light of day.

The android market has some issues of its own.  Number one, you can only view the large majority of the store on the device itself(though you can view a small portion of it online).  The G1's screen is certainly large enough for that, but I wish I could open up the store in my browser and look through the apps.  It would just be easier on the eyes, and it'd be a quicker look.

I found this article on Gizmodo today(Link opens in a new window or tab).  Chorus for iPhone Puts a Better App Store Inside the App Store.  So it looks like developers are aware of the problem and are working on way around it.

(envIO networks, inc:  Please make a version of this for Android.  kthxbai)

Is this process just as horrible on Blackberry and Windows Mobile?  Is it worse?

Addictive Web Apps

Me
Okay, I'll admit it.  I'm addicted to MicroBlogging, Twitter especially (though I have some fondness for Pownce as well).  I just can't get enough of it.  A year ago I stated "Twitter is for Headslappers!"  Well, I guess I'm a headslapper, cause I can't go more than a few hours without checking my Twitter Feed.  I use a desktop client, Twhirl, to keep track of it on a regular basis when I'm home, and I have a link to Twitter on my home screen on the iPod Touch, so if WiFi is accessible I can check Twitter (though I do check my email first.  Priorities.  Email can make me money.  Twitter hasn't done that for me, yet.)

Another addictive web app for me is Google Analytics.  I have a desktop client for that as well.  I just love checking the stats on visitors to my tech blog.  It doesn't change the way I blog, but it has made me more conscious of what can draw traffic to my blog, and what doesn't work well.  (I've had little success using Digg to get people to my site.  Reddit hasn't worked at all.  Stumbleupon pumps traffic to my site at an astonishing rate at times.)

But the most addictive thing I do on the web:  Google Hosted Domains.  I love the fact that I have this huge GMail box, but on my own domain (dogboi.info).  I can have up to 100 email addresses there for free (not that I'd ever need that many.)  Plus, I get Google Calendar, Google Apps, etc, all on my domain.  Sweet, and it's free.

And if you are using Twitter or Pownce and want to add me there, my screen name on both is dogboi

Just send me a message on whichever service telling me you're adding me because of livejournal.  :-)
