I mentioned about a month ago I was working on a social networking site for bears, chubs, cubs, chasers and admirers. I've decided to partner with Ning to make this a reality faster. I'm weeks, if not days away from open beta.
Using Ning allows me to use a bunch of features that might be otherwise difficult to implement. These include Flickr and Facebook integration, OpenSocial container support (currently in Beta at Ning), videos and music. They're will be groups, etc. It'll be a full featured Social Networking site. It'll be an invite only site to prevent minors from accessing it (thus allowing us to post adult photos and videos if we so choose.)
Since It'll be ad sponsored, it'll be free for members. I'll have to shell out some money eventually to use a real domain rather than a subdomain and for other features, but that's after it's been fully tested.
With this in mind, once I'm up for beta, I'd like to make it available to my friends and compatriots here. So, I set up an email address on my domain so you can ask for invites when it's ready to be launched. The email address is bearmundi@dogboi.info
Just send a message there requesting access with the email address you want me to send the invite to. As soon as the site is up, I'll send everyone an invite, and then you can invite your friends to participate as well.

[Note 2: I posted this to my journal and to the cubs_n_bears community, so if you see it twice, I apologize in advance]
Well, I'm working on a new project. Actually, I've been doing preliminaries for awhile.
I want to create a bear/chub/chaser etc. Social Networking site. Not a hook up site, but a full social networking platform. (Think Myspace for bears). I'm envisioning a community site with lots of features, including drag and drop profile widgets(powered by scriptalicious), and maybe a showcase for community artists, musicians, writers, etc. I'd like to have an article writing feature (like gather.com) for user submitted articles. Any other ideas are welcome and appreciated.
I started working on it. The working name of the software is Qinexi.us. That'll be open source software.
I'm playing around with different names for the site. The following is a logo design I'm working on. It's not set in stone, of course, and the site name is subject to change. I just went through a domain name search to see what was open. Not much left, lol. But that's okay.

Everything will be set up using Ruby On Rails. This is the framework that Qinexi.us is being built on. I used it for the first time today and within minutes I had a working site. Within a few more minutes I had a nicely formatted site. Within a few hours, I had a database backbone, and a working login screen. Rails definitely encourages agile development.
Oh, and this will be an OpenSocial Container.
Everyone else has jumped on the Web 2.0 bandwagon. Why not the bear community? Besides, I envision something a little beyond Web 2.0 eventually, with some Semantic Web features making everyone's life a little easier and a little more pleasant.
